If you enjoy making things, taking things apart to see how they work and improving things this is the apprenticeship for you.

You will begin your training in the Toyota Academy based onsite at Toyota UK in Burnaston, Derbyshire. Deeside apprentices will have accommodation and transportation support whilst in the Academy.Our world leading trainers will support and guide you as you learn skills in welding, machining, hand tool use, electronics,robotics,fluid and air power . We will also send you on an offsite training course to develop your teamwork, communication and planning skills through a series of outdoor activities.

Our Maintenance Apprenticeship is all about you and what you want to achieve. You can work towards level 3 Engineering qualifications or strive towards level 4.

On completion of your apprenticeship you'll have gained the skills, qualifications and experience needed to be a fully capable member of our Burnaston or Deeside maintenance team. Your future will be whatever you choose to make it. What will I do?

The first four months of the apprenticeship will primarily be based in the Toyota Academy on site at Toyota Manufaturing UK.

The Toyota Academy is run by experienced Toyota Manufacturing UK staff with support from Burton and South Derbyshire College staff who will deliver teaching and training specified by Toyota that underpins the apprenticeship programme.You will be enrolled as an apprentice of Burton and South Derbyshire College.

Your Development at Toyota Manufacturing UK

  • Paid overtime

    Where overtime is worked, this will attract a payment as follows:
    Mon-Fri - Time and one third for first 2 hours, time and one half thereafter
    Saturday - Time and one half
    Sunday - Double time

  • 25 days paid annual holiday

    There will be two plant shutdowns each year (a fortnight in August and a week at Christmas) and you will be required to take holiday at these times.

    You will then be able to use your remaining holiday entitlement at your discretion provided this is authorised by your Supervisor.

  • Free workwear

    A free workwear allowance is provided to all new Members. Options are also available to purchase additional items at a discounted rate should this be required.

  • Subsidised restaurants

    We have three subsidised restaurants on-site serving a wide range of foods. One of our restaurants serves a Japanese dish every day. A restaurant facility is provided in the apprentice development centre.

  • Stage 1. This is a 22 month period which includes basic engineering theory training, basic practical skills training, a personal development period and placement weeks within Toyota.
    It also covers subjects such as electricity, electronics, welding, machining, control systems and hydraulics - in short, all the theory and practical skills that you need to commence your career in maintenance. You will need to study hard during this period to ensure you are successful.
  • Stage 2. 22 months spent in a maintenance team within Toyota, practically learning how to apply your new skills and how to safely maintain our plant and systems. During this stage you will also undertake a number of higher level technical skills courses on specific items of equipment.
  • Interested in a career in maintenance and engineering.
  • Passionate about working with your hands and solving problems.
  • Excited about working with the latest high tech computerised equipment.
  • Able to show us that you can work well as part of a team.
  • Willing to be patient and show outstanding attention to detail.
  • Willing to study hard on one of the industry's most advance Apprenticeship Schemes.

To be eligible to apply you must possess or be anticipating a minimum of 4 GCSE passes at grade 4 or above (click here for an explanation of the new GCSE grades) including Maths, English and Science.

  • During stage 1 of the programme you will gain a Level 2 Technical Certificate in Engineering.
  • During stage 2 onward of the programme you will gain Level 2 and Level 3 NVQ in Engineering and a Level 3 technical certificate.
  • For the right person, there may also be opportunity to undertake a Level 4 qualification and possibly move on to an engineering related degree programme.

At Toyota we believe that we should develop you in a range of personal skills as well as technical skills. Our offsite experiential training takes place during the first year of your apprenticeship and will develop your teamwork, communication and planning skills through a series of outdoor activities, for example, rafting, canoeing, climbing and/or a mountain expedition.

You will also complete several Personal Development training courses, such as presentation skills, team working and communication.

For the right people, there may be opportunity to study for further qualifications, such as an engineering related degree.

You will be learning from the best in the industry! With the combination of skills from our Toyota Trainers. You will learn about all aspects of engineering and maintenance.

We will ensure that you fully understand your future job and what working life is like in a busy manufacturing and engineering environment. Before you start the main technical skills training, you will spend time on site at Toyota, learning about their business and getting to know your new colleagues. You will be given support at all times through the training scheme by experienced Toyota Trainers. You will have regular meetings where we will review your progress and give you feedback on your performance.

'Classroom' technical knowledge and skill alone is not enough to become excellent at your job, therefore we include personal development and the opportunity to practically improve your skills throughout the training programme.

You will be responsible for your daily transport to Toyota. Unfortunately public transport is not available to the Toyota site.
