Back to top - What is the training programme?
Our Maintenance Engineering training programme is 48 months long and fully meets the requirements of the national ‘Advanced Apprenticeship Framework’. The training programme is in three stages:- Stage 1. This is a 12 month period which includes basic engineering theory training, basic practical skills training, a personal development period spent at an offsite location, two experience placement periods in production and one experience placement period in a Maintenance department. Stage 2. This is an intensive year of learning and covers subjects such as electricity, electronics, welding, machining, control systems and hydraulics – in short, all the theory and practical skills that you need to commence your career in maintenance. You will need to study hard during this year to ensure you are successful. Stage 3. Two years spent in a maintenance team practically learning how to apply your new skills and how to safely maintain our plant and systems. During this stage you will also undertake a number of higher level technical skills courses on specific items of equipment, for example Robots, Servo Drive systems and so on.
Back to top - What qualifications will I gain?
During stage 1 of the programme you will gain an NVQ Level 2 in ‘Performing Manufacturing Operations’ and a Level 2 Technical Certificate in Engineering. During stage 2 onward of the programme you will gain level 2 and level 3 NVQ’s in Engineering and a L3 technical certificate.
Back to top - What is "Personal Training"?
At Toyota we believe that we should develop you in a range of personal skills as well as technical skills. Our offsite experiential training takes place during the first month of your apprenticeship and will develop your teamwork, communication and planning skills through a series of outdoor activities, for example, rafting, canoeing, climbing and/or a mountain expedition.
Back to top - Where will the training take place?
The majority of the training will take place at Burnaston, unless you are applying for a position in Deeside. (Please see question 10)
Back to top - Do you provide transport?
It is your responsibility to get to the Toyota plant at Burnaston, therefore we ask everyone to make their own daily transport arrangements. Public transport is not available to site and therefore employees need to make their own travel arrangements, however, as a company we encourage 'lift sharing' with our employees, and support it internally through Human Resources Division. Please note this is run on a voluntary basis but there may be an employee who is willing to bring you to and from work, which can be arranged if you are successful in your application.
Back to top - If I am applying for a position in Deeside will I train and work at Deeside during the apprenticeship?
During the first 12 months of the apprenticeship you will be mainly based at our Burnaston site, with a short placement at Deeside (approximately 7 weeks). During your second year you will be based at Burnaston for the full duration. During your third and forth year you will be placed at Deeside.
Back to top - If I am applying for a job in Deeside where will I live during the apprenticeship?
For the first two years of your apprenticeship you will live in Derby and we will provide you with accommodation and pay for all related costs. You will be expected to find your own accommodation during your placements at Deeside.
Back to top - What makes Toyota Manufacturing UK’s Apprenticeship programme different to others?
Firstly, we ensure that you fully understand your future job and what working life is like in a busy manufacturing environment by giving you an early opportunity to practically experience both production and maintenance before you start the main technical skills development phase. Secondly you are given support at all times through the training scheme by skilled and experienced Toyota members and trainers – you will have regular ‘1-1’ meetings where you and the training staff will review your progress and give you feedback on your performance. ‘Classroom’ technical knowledge and skill alone is not sufficient – we include personal development and the opportunity to practically improve your skills throughout the training programme.
Back to top - What are the opportunities for career progression?
If you successfully complete our apprenticeship you will become a maintenance team member in one of our maintenance areas. Thereafter your progression is based on your individual performance in comparison to other maintenance members.
Back to top - Are there opportunities for further learning?
Following your apprenticeship you will undergo further training courses, not only technical courses but personal and Toyota development courses as well. We also will pay for you to study for further qualifications should you wish through our ‘Company Support for Education’ scheme.
